Many jobs are now being outsourced outside the company, and the ability to telecommute is making a big difference in the way companies organize themselves. Where once even the layout of an office was dictated by where files needed to be accessed, today's businesses have far fewer limitations. Some corporations are even experimenting with open office designs and unassigned workstations, where an employee simply chooses where to work and once logged in has access to all the files they would normally need. These types of models, taken a bit further, are the basis of the rise in jobs where people are able to work at home.

Jobs like these have always existed, a craft economy, for instance, once existed and was dependent on thousands of home workers making products inside their own homes. Nowadays, the work from home economy is more complex and involves more high tech creations. The use of the internet as a way to transmit d! ata is allowing far more jobs to be done from the comfort and flexibility of home than before, but only a limited number are currently able to be done in this way.


The jobs that are possible to work from home tend to be of a specific type. First, they tend to be heavily involved in data that can be transmitted easily. Pottery, for instance, is a very good work at home job, unless you have a home studio. Multimedia design, on the other hand, is an excellent job for a work from home business. Animation work and other types of media design only involve a computer and some relatively easy to buy software. Data files are simple to transfer, especially with a broadband connection, and the primary difference between someone who can do the work and someone who cannot is not the capital investment, but the skill required. For that reason, computer animation is an excellent job for someone who wants to work from home.

Other jobs can also be done with work at home fo! r the same reason. Writers, of course have a reputation for be! ing soli tary, but there are others that can do their work from home with little difference from the office. Day traders for instance are people whose work consists of trading stocks extremely often throughout the day, taking advantage of microscopic changes in the price of a stock. By taking advantage of the natural volatility of the market, some have made large amounts of money by doing all of their work at home for a few hours each day. Such niche jobs are only possible because of the amount of information that is transferable over the internet. By accessing websites that cater to stock traders, they can get all of their work down at home, possibly without changing out of their pajamas.

There are other jobs as well; blogging has only become popular in the last few years, but is now an excellent way for some people to make money doing work at home. Not everyone succeeds, but those that do well do so for the same reasons that all of the other people who use the internet to wo! rk from home succeed. By erasing barriers, the internet allows people almost anywhere in the world to do exactly what they would prefer to be doing. Working at home has become a path to freedom and wealth for millions because of this.
