Thousands of people start home based businesses every year. So what sets the successful ventures apart from the unsuccessful ones?

There are a few key things that you need to keep in mind when you're looking for a business to start. Many well intended and highly qualified entrepreneurs start home businesses with high expectations, only to fail. These are some important points that I have deducted from my experience in having a home based business. Hopefully you'll be able to take some of these ideas and apply them successfully to your new endeavor.


1) Do Your Research

The most important factor to beginning any successful business, whether home based or traditional, is to be well informed. You need to research different opportunities and narrow it down to the one company that best fits what you're looking for. Hindsight is 20/20. You don't want to have to look back on the decision that you made as a poor choice becaus! e you were ill prepared. This will involve doing your due diligence. Find out about the founders, the comp plan, and the product that you will be promoting. The only poor choice that you can make is an uninformed decision.

2) Have A Budget

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make early in your business start up is to squander away a lot of money on unnecessary purchases. A well thought out business plan requires a strict budget. You need to know exactly what is going out and coming in. This will be especially important early on before you turn a profit. Not being prepared and spending frivolously will only add additional pressure to an already stressful situation. Focus on the essentials and leave the extras for when you can afford it.

3) Manage Your Time

Another thing to keep in mind when starting to work from home is time management. Considering that most people who start a home based business will still be employed outside of their home f! ull time, this makes time management all that more important. ! Create a list of things that you need to accomplish on a daily basis and then work through the list until every item is completed. Avoid distractions and focus solely on work when you're in your office.

4) Find A Mentor

This may be a difficult assignment considering that as entrepreneurs we pride ourselves on independence. However, receiving training and guidance from someone who is already successful in your area is priceless.

While starting a home based business is exhilarating, there are certain patterns that need to be developed early on. This will ensure success for you and your family for years to come.

Successful people knew very early that in order to be successful, you must be INITIATIVE. Only you can guarantee your own success and only you can hinder yourself from success.

Success was accumulated and builds on the foundation of hard work. No matter what kind of industry you are in, if you want to be successful, you have to work for it. Success was never achieved overnight. Do you remember the saying "Rome was not build in one day"?


To be a successful person, you must initiate your hard work. Because of the initiative, you will start to be responsible to yourself and you will do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. And by that time, you will start to take your own action without waiting for others to tell you.

When you lock initiative in your mind, creativity will start to flow into your head and you will be able to generate beneficial idea. Then you can accomplish your task in an effective way. Y! ou will start to embrace risk in a more positive way and even know how to calculate it to maximize your success.

A lot of people nowadays are afraid of taking risk. The reason may because that they fear they might get hurt, disappointed or even laugh by others if they failed. It is a question why you want to think like that? When you started to do something, you have another 50% chance to be successful. Who told you that the chances of failing are higher than SUCCESS?

In the 21st. century, personal initiative is highly recommended for success. You take our own action when you know what to do without others pushing you forward. And this is the attitude to success. By the way, you also won't like pushing you to do things. Right?

However there are still a lot of people nowadays kept giving excuses like:

"I can't do it, I have no time."
"I will do it later."
"I am occupied with other things."

Don't they just sound familiar?

Succes! s only belongs to those who take their own action. When you be! come an initiative person, you control your personal improvement. You understand the meaning of personal development and you start to grow.

You can only create opportunity for yourself when you are passionate about your own success and improvement. However this will be different for those who play safe, they always wait for others to give them chance and by doing that they are actually pushing success away.

So from now on, change your attitude. Remember, be INITIATIVE and you will be able to change your life.

Mlm Training - How To Get Prospects Past The Initial Presentation

A network marketer recently emailed my office to seek some MLM training advice for a problem he was having: He could get appointments set...but prospects seemed to disappear after that. Here's the question:

"I can get appointments to meet with people. My call rate is very good with people I know or have met. But I can't seem to get a follow through meeting, to go further. "I'm told that, 'you can't say the wrong thing to the right person or you can't say the right thing to the wrong person.' I'm supposed to find the person 'who is looking' because if they are looking you 'couldn't beat them out of getting into network marketing with a stick.'" -Warren


Great question Warren.

I do agree with the quote-with a few additions and perhaps some alterations. Sometimes the prospect might "be ready" but isn't looking or isn't looking for an MLM business.

Picture a person driving to his! job and is pondering that he wishes he could own his own business. Is he looking? No. He's thinking. If you know this person, and you've had the proper MLM training, then you know how to do an effective invite (using the Inviting Formula) and will be able to take this person from "thinking" to looking. Rarely have I seen someone who was out looking for an MLM company. It does happen but not commonly.

Most often your quote is a comment made by speakers from a stage who don't know how to train the specifics of inviting so the quote is a variation to "just do the numbers."

It's very easy to say, "Just do the numbers." It's harder to say, "Let me show you how to do an effective invite call." And, it's even harder to say, "I'll teach YOU how to do an effective invite call."

So instead sometimes a leader's MLM training comes down instructing you to just say, "Do the numbers" and find people who are looking. The other thing is, you need to be the best invit! er you can be when you do talk to that person who is looking. ! So no ma tter what you do, you're going to have to learn good inviting skills. And by the way, follow through is part of the inviting skills!

As for your follow thru question, I'm assuming that you're using the words FOLLOW THROUGH as I discussed in the MLM training series "Professional Inviter" - which is different than FOLLOW UP.

Follow through is once your prospect has indicated an interest to do the business that you follow through and deliver EVERY THING the prospect requires to get him what he's stated he needs/wants and/or doesn't want-this you would have gotten by using the Inviting Formula.

Normally this is way more than what is in your standard-issue training manual. If you hand the training manual to the new person and the first thing they read is, "make a list of 200 people" and your new person doesn't do it, have you delivered everything the prospect requires? No.

Something is still in their way. Inability to communicate may be in their way;! it may be they need a better understanding of what they will be doing; it may be they don't see themselves being a sales person or it may be that they need to fly to the company so they have certainty that it's a real business!

If you've listened to Professional Inviter you've heard my live calls and heard me on the phone with Ruth and Nadira. The moment they indicated that they were interested in the business I moved towards an appointment. If I can't meet with someone locally, I just continue the conversation over the phone. Now both Ruth and Nadira had things that were still in the way of doing the business that I had to help them overcome-and both of them were "looking."

My point is, the key to FOLLOW THROUGH is NOT saying "Next" as soon as someone is stuck on something! Help them through whatever they're stuck on. Now I know many people will say that I have the Mother Theresa complex. Well, I don't mind being compared to her because she was a very noble ! person and helped a lot of people. But remember, my sponsor wo! uld not have sponsored me had he not followed up and followed through with me to help me overcome my barriers.

When do I "quit" following through? When they stop taking my calls or they ask me to stop calling.

The speed at which you identify what the person is stuck on is critical. When you first sponsor someone or you have someone who has indicated they're interested-do not let a single day go by that you're not talking to them. Keep them close so you can get them past sticking points.

Also as soon as they start moving, gently (meaning very slowly) ease off so they don't grow dependent on you. This is a topic I'll leave for a later time, but I wanted you to see that some people make the mistake of connecting themselves to their people and never pass them the power to do it themselves ... so they never do.

If I could leave you with one key MLM training point as it relates to Follow Up and Follow Through, it would be this: You must have a sincere desire to! make your prospect's life better. When your aim and intention is focused on this, your follow up actions will be focused on the right things, and your prospect will respond to your helpfulness and sincere desire to help.

Hey Online Home Business Upline -- I Quit!

Those are words you never want to hear when dealing with your online business. We all hear about the 95% who quit, and as an upline in your organization, it is up to you to keep this from happening. I want to give a few tips to help keep your downline motivated, informed, and focused on their business. If they quit, not only do they lose, but so do you.

First off, you have to make this venture personal (not just for yourself). If you are too focused on conversions, articles, PPC's, etc...you are going to lose a valuable asset in your home business. Your downline. You have to communicate to the people who are helping to create your success. As an upline it is your responsibility to teach others what you have done. Why would you not do that? Emulation of success breathes even more success.


OK upline, have you sent a broadcast or postcard to the people in your groups letting them know that you are there for them? Ar! e you giving them vital information on how to grow their business? Now, I do not want to hear, "I send them emails but they never respond." Maybe they don't. Maybe they do not have you on their acceptable email list. Ask them to send you a response stating they do. If they do not respond, at least you sent the information and keep sending it. Also, get them to join forums or social groups so they feel like they are part of the team.

The more you send, the better chance you have to keep someone in your group. As an upline you can make or break a person who is seriously thinking of bailing out. When someone gets the impression that you care about their success, this can be a turning point for them. For example, say you have someone who is on the fence and is unsure if they want to quit the online business or leap over it running toward financial freedom. As their personal upline, do you let them fall or do you light the fire under them that causes the chain reaction wi! thin them that makes them the next online business guru?
The po wer of one email or even a phone call can make that person in your downline the next Internet millionaire. Just one. What if you duplicate this over and over because you take 2 minutes a few days a week to let your people know that are there for them? Remember, if you are at the top of the totem pole, the only way you stay there is to keep the others in the line stable. "Hey, upline I quit" should never be heard if you do everything you can to help your downline find their groove.

Teach them to do exactly what you do. The sooner you erase the "quit" mentality, the more growth you will have in the future.

1. The Company Look at t! heir vis ion statement (if they don't have one, move on). What is their track record? Are more people joining than leaving. In other words, is the company growing? Are they debt free? You never want to join a company that may go out of business soon after joining. Read testimonials written by real people with positive results. (Read any negative ones too.) Leadership and Training is a key to success for any business. Make sure that you will have access to leaders by phone and email without having to jump through hoops or belong to some secret society. This is your business, but not to be done alone.

2. The Product/Service The company must have a product or service that is marketable. If the company does not have a product or service, move on, it is not a legitimate company. The product or service should be of good quality and unique to your marketplace or niche. I recommend if you yourself would not purchase the product and use it, even if there was not an opportunity with it,! keep looking. If you do not use the product or service yourself, you may find it difficult to market to others. Once you become a product of the product, it will tend sell itself. A money back guarantee is also important. It conveys that the product is so good that the company is willing to give the consumer their money back if they are not completely satisfied.

3. Need/Marketplace There must be a need for your product or service in the marketplace. If there is none, you may want to move on. If the product is unique or new, is there marketing behind it to get the attention of the marketplace. Does the product inspire you to think outside the box when it comes to marketing. If on your own you can think of several different ways that you could see yourself marketing the product, you may have a winner. Watch for new trends and catch them early. If you are getting in at the early stage of a hot niche, there may be bumps along the way, but once they are overcome, the sky! can be the limit. Does the company have a marketing system in! place. If you alone are supporting the marketing, be prepared to spend enormous amounts of money getting your product in front of the masses.

4. Compensation Every company that offers a business opportunity should have a compensation plan. You will want to know how you will be paid, when you will be paid, if your pay increases with good results, do you have to pass up sales in the beginning and is there more than one way to make money (is there opportunity to earn passive and residual income). A lot of new home business owners don't realize that they do not get paid for all the other things that they must do to operate their business, again you are in business for yourself and those other things are typical for any business owner. You will only get paid when you sell the product or service or sign up another person to sell the product or service. You may want to keep your day job until you are selling enough to be making a profit.

5. Timing Timing is everything. Don't! pick a product that has already saturated the marketplace. Don't pick a product that was popular in the past and obsolete in the future. You can expect great returns of your investments when the timing is right. Your timing is important. When you are mentally prepared to do what it takes to own your own home based business, you are putting the odds in your favor. Take your time deciding on the correct business for you. Do your due diligence. Invest the time needed to feel secure in your decision. The decision is ultimately yours to make, so you want to feel good about it.

In summary, start with yourself, your desires, your why, your purpose and goals. Then look for a reputable debt free company that is not making unrealistic promises. One that has a product or service which is needed or unique in the marketplace. You should like it and use it yourself. It should offer a guarantee and the timing should be right. If the product or service fits into these criteria, the! n feel confident in your selection. You may have just selected! the hom e business opportunity that you will feel good about and will assist you in making the income you desire.

Working from home is a fast growing trend these days. But what most people do is they jump right in with the hopes and dreams of making huge profits before they even think about the fact that there are some disadvantages to working at home.

The benefits do indeed outweigh the drawbacks to working at home, however, you should consider the following disadvantages to working at home before making your final decision.


1) Acknowledge Your Present Job or Career

You may not be able to easily transfer your current career into a work at home situation. For example, if you work as a police officer or in the medical field, you may not be able to easily transition your career to working from home unless you change careers entirely.

Creative jobs like writing and design transfer well, as do, administrative and sales positions. If you cannot make the work at home switch with your present job, you can try to think ! of something that you would like to do working from home and begin investigating that field.

2) Cost - Disadvantage or Advantage?

You can decide if working from home is right for you by determining the cost factor. Many moms will want to stay at home to work in order to save money on daycare. But, when you work from home you are now self-employed.

You will need to get health insurance, which will come out of your own pocket. You will have to pay many taxes and be required to keep excellent records of your income and expenses, so you can fill out your end of year tax return.

3) Working at Home with Children

It is not as easy as it may seem to work at home with children. If your children are too young to be in school yet, it is usually pretty difficult to get any work done when they are awake. You will get most of your work done when they are sleeping during naptime and later at night.

Family members may not mind taki! ng care of the children from time to time, but in the end both! the chi ldren and the job are your responsibility. It is easier to work from home with older children, but you will still need to have a balanced schedule in order to get all the things done that you need to do.

4) Discipline and Self-Motivation

In order to accomplish everything that you want to you will need to be disciplined and self-motivated. If you need encouragement by others to keep going, then I wouldn't recommend that you work from home. You will not have anyone looking over your shoulders and making sure the job is being done. Many distractions can get in the way, such as TV, friends, family, housework, emails and surfing the Internet.

5) Isolation

Working from home can be lonely and frustrating. Find ways to make sure that you remain comfortable spending time alone. If you feel depressed at all, you will become withdrawn and sad. It is best to take the right steps to combat the loneliness before the issue worsens.

Once yo! u have considered these factors you may decide that working from home is not the best thing for you. However, hundreds of people deal with these disadvantages to working at home and still seem to find success in their careers.

If working from home is really what you want to do, then these drawbacks should not stop you. Just be sure that you understand that there are some disadvantages to working at home as well as the many advantages.

Ok, you have scoured the internet for a business opportunity that is going to make you that dream income. You know it's out there; you just need to find it. But which ones are good and which ones are bad? How do you know? What are the signs to success with a home business?

No matter where you go on the World Wide Web, everyone seems to say "I have found what is going to make you successful". But without some extensive research and a little insight on how the whole web thing works you just might find yourself loosing a lot of money and time. I mean do these people actually think we are going to put trust in something or someone that promises me to be making 10,000 dollars the first month in business?


That's a little far fetched if you ask me. No doubt, in some really rare instances it has happened but could it really happen to you? In my years of trial and error, I have found that it does not happen over night ! and you do have to put in effort to get paid for it. So that seems to help you weed out a few thousand opportunities. So, what next?

For one it would be good to ask "how long has the company been in business?" I know there are companies out there that haven't been around long and you would just have to take a gamble that they are all they say they are, but there are some other ways to "test" them. One thing to look for: Do they provide a phone number for you to contact them? This may sound simple, but just do a little research for yourself and see how many actually provide you with a number! And yes some will give a number but you can never talk to a real person. It does make a huge difference.

Next, what about the product? How big is the market for it? Is it consumable? Is it a product you can believe in and truly "love" to share with others? These are some great questions show the "signs to success". First of all let's say you find a product that everyone is! buying and it is consumable (which means it can be used up an! d orders will need to be repeated) ok you seem to have found it, but you decide that I don't really like it myself but since there is such a huge market for it and it's consumable I think I can do this. Do you really think you can sell something you don't truly love? I have tried it already and it made me hate the opportunity I was in just like having a job I hated! Who wants that? So finding something you feel good about promoting is a very good "sign" to look for.

Ok now you have found your perfect company with a perfect product. Now what? Another good thing to check for is the cost to become a member of that opportunity. I know the old saying: "you get what you pay for" and while that does ring true in so many cases, it's not always the case in this business. For instance, I paid $3,500 to join a business and they didn't even provide a product! I had to find one for myself! You would think it would have been a great opportunity since it cost so much but not in that case! I! found one that was free to join and the company disappeared after I first looked into it. So it can really be a matter of investigating the company further.

What about a compensation plan? Well we all know the "pyramid" schemes and how they only make the top spot rich. So how do you know the difference? For one Multi Level marketing, at first glance appears to be a pyramid, but after you understand how it works, you will see that it works to better anyone who puts in the hard work, not just the lead guy! And yes I did say "hard work". It won't just happen for you; you have to make it work. Although you can find opportunities that will work with just a good product, I recommend you finding one that provides a great comp plan.

For instance I joined a company that had a comp plan that only allowed you to enroll 6 people in top spots and after that you had to put people under other people. That was bad because you were practically giving your hard work away! Ther! e are companies that allow unlimited top spots and pay down 8 ! levels! So you make the most out of what you give in!

Finally a good "sign to success" is a good support and mentoring team. Not one that just claims to have one but who actually put it in motion! How many jobs have you had that just put you out there and said "do it" without any training? Of course it's in the best interest of the owner to train you to do your job. It works the same in internet home business opportunities. You want to find someone who has been successful and is willing to teach you how to do it too! Some things to look for are: Do they provide team meetings via telephone? Do they have training calls available every week? Can you contact them with questions? Do they have annual conferences?

Although these are just some great guidelines, not all companies will have every one in place and still be a great opportunity. So just get out there and do some research for your self you will find pretty quickly that they all pretty much fall into the same categor! ies. Just keep in mind: "if they promise big things in a short time", it is probably too good to be true!

Creating a work from home business may be one of the best decisions that we ever make. We are the boss. We decide when to start and when to quit our work day. We spend more time with our loved ones. Everyone's motivation for becoming a successful home business entrepreneur is different. Some of us want to give our family a better life style. Others want to earn more money. Whatever our motivation might be, there are distinct advantages for having a business at home:


1) You are closer to your loved ones.
2) You are creating your own business.
3) You are producing an opportunity for personal growth.
4) You are in charge.
5) You are in a posi! tion to increase your income.
6) You are taking control of your future.

The advantages for having a business at home are vast. But there are significant drawbacks that can limit our potential for work from home success. Just as the benefits can motivate us to succeed, the drawbacks will become barriers to our achievements.

Major obstacles that we will encounter are:

1) Working at home.
2) Learning self-discipline.

1) Working at home

One of the benefits for developing an online home based business can become a hazard. Distractions will come and they will arrive everyday. Friends or family will have emergencies and we will have to stop what we are doing and address the situation. Our children have dental appointments or soccer practice and guess who has joined the family shuttle service. We are at home so that makes us available.

The same home that was our respite from the pressures of everyday life has now become our work envir! onment. We don't need to go down to the office because our res! idence h as developed into our business. We will be tempted to commit an extra hour here or an additional day there. The required breaks and lunch that were part of our regular job can be ignored because we want to accelerate the success of our internet business.

The temptation for working longer hours is inevitable. We want our home business to succeed so we choose to burn the midnight oil during the week and through the weekend. We convince ourselves that the quantity of our personal time will equal the quality of our internet business achievements. Working from home has given us the opportunity to devote more of ourselves for creating meaningful accomplishments. Suddenly, there will be a tap on our office door and a small voice will ask if we are almost done.

Unfortunately, we encounter this hurdle because we did not recognize the first hazard on the road to creating our home business.

2) Learning self-discipline

We believe that our lives reflect self-d! iscipline when we work for someone else. They tell us when to be at work. They tell us what to do. They tell us when to take our breaks. They tell us when to go home. When we get home, we try to fulfill our duties with an organized approach. Unfortunately, we are unaware that our meaning of self-discipline is going to change.

The decision to create a work at home enterprise is based upon our business achievements and personal accomplishments. We believe that we can apply these experiences to the success of our online venture. We are unprepared for the adjustments that we need to make from being employed to self-employed. As we begin developing our internet business, we ignore the hazard that leads to lost time because of our desire for success. Suddenly, we hear the knock at the door.

Creating a home based enterprise will lead to confusion and frustration. We will get overwhelmed and lost. This is a new experience and it will take time and effort for our onlin! e venture to become successful. Self-discipline is like a flas! hlight i n the darkness. It helps us get from Point A to Point B.

Organization is essential for self-discipline. Developing a work from home business requires a plan. A plan requires goals. Goals require a strategy. Strategy requires time. Time requires a schedule. A schedule requires a commitment. Create a daily, weekly and monthly schedule. This is the foundation for developing self-discipline. We must have the commitment and motivation to follow our plan. Our self-discipline will be as effective as the effort we make to creating, applying and adhering to our purpose.

Our desire for developing a home business is motivated by the benefits. Success is dependent upon our ability to overcome the obstacles. These hazards will come as we are creating our work from home venture. Awareness of these challenges will prepare us for the adjustments we need to make to create our online success.
